Living and working in Spain indefinitely

Long-term residency

A permit that allows people who have completed the required period of legal residence and meet the other requirements to live and work in Spain indefinitely.

Is this the right option for you?

Once you have five years of legal and continuous residence in Spain, you should apply for long-term residency instead of a new renewal.

We carry out a prior review, especially of your periods of residence and absences from Spain, to confirm that the conditions are met before filing the application.

Where it makes sense, we also review the possibility of obtaining EU long-term residency.

Main requirements

These are the essential requirements. The specific documents may vary depending on your nationality, your personal situation and changes in the law.

  1. Five years of residence

Having lived legally in Spain continuously for five years.

  2. Limited absences

Absences from Spain during that period must not exceed the limits set by the regulations.

  3. Criminal record

No criminal record in Spain or in previous countries of residence.

  4. EU long-term residency

For EU long-term residency, also sufficient financial means and health insurance.

  5. Other cases

There are special cases, such as pensioners or people born in Spain, with their own requirements.

Duration

The permit is indefinite. The foreign national identity card (TIE) is renewed every five years.

Advantages

It allows you to work on equal terms with Spanish nationals and is required to bring your parents to Spain.
