Keeping your permit
Renewals and extensions
Handling renewals and extensions of residence, work and stay permits.
Is this the right option for you?
Before filing the renewal, we check that the requirements were met during the previous period, including any absences, employment or professional activity, financial means, Social Security and any circumstance that could affect the continuity of the permit.
The goal is to anticipate possible problems before the application is filed.
If you do not meet a requirement, there are alternatives: an integration effort report, a change to another permit or, if refused, second-chance arraigo.
Main requirements
These are the essential requirements. The specific documents may vary depending on your nationality, your personal situation and changes in the law.
Deadline
The renewal can be filed in the two months before expiry or in the three months afterwards, in the latter case with a possible fine.
Extended while pending
Filing on time extends the validity of your permit until a decision is made.
Requirements maintained
Proving that the requirements of the permit were maintained during the previous period, depending on its type.
Integration effort report
For some renewals, if you cannot prove one requirement, an integration effort report issued by your autonomous community may be taken into account.
Alternatives
If your situation has changed, a change of permit may be more suitable; with five years of residence, long-term residency.
Duration
The length of the renewed permit depends on its type.
Five years of residence
If you already have five years of legal and continuous residence, you should apply for long-term residency instead of a new renewal.
